Active holidays in Schenna

The variety of landscapes and network of cable cars in the alpine regions make Schenna a natural paradise for hikers, mountaineers and climbing enthusiasts. An extensive network of Waal and hiking trails, not to mention the cycle paths for leisure cyclists and mountain bikers that extend over the high plateau.

The Waalweg Paths

Explore a variety of panoramic trails, extensive forest and meadow paths in the valley as well as the mountain region. From early spring to late autumn, the atmospheric Waalweg trails offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the Etsch Valley. ‘Waalwege’ are the relatively flat trails running along the old irrigation channels of the mid-range mountains, which farmers used for centuries to irrigate their fields. Today, the channels are picturesque, mostly flat hiking trails with exciting views into the rich cultural landscape.

Some of the most popular trails around Schenna are the Schenner Waalweg, the Mais Waalweg, the Marling Waalweg, as well as the Tappeinerweg and the Gilf promenade.

Hotel Innerhofer is not only a starting point for many hiking trips, but also a popular base for day trips and excursions.

A visit to Trauttmansdorff Castle near Merano and the adjoining Museum for Tourism is an absolute must. The castle includes the Botanical Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, one of the most beautiful garden parks in Europe. Embark on a botanical world tour in a circular route.

Round off your excursion with a visit to the spa town on the Passer. The Merano promenades are ideal for ambling, while the town centre around the medieval arcades is ideal for shopping or enjoying a drink outside.

Day excursions into the surrounding area

There are a some beautiful excursions to be undertaken in the surrounding area, such as the Upper Etsch region along the Wine Road, the Vinschgau with its ancient Romanesque churches and chapels, or the two historic cities of Bolzano and Trento.

Lake Garda, which is only 120 km away, is also a worthwhile visit. Schenna Tourist Office organizes numerous weekly excursions to the lake, which is the largest in Italy. There are also tours to Venice and the Arena in Verona, not to mention the legendary Dolomites.

The 550 metre ascent is perfectly secured with 1000 metres of steel cable and has medium levels of difficulty (A – B – B/C). It is therefore suited to the less confident alpinist and is ideal for families with children who enjoy walking and climbing. When ascending the via ferrata, an early start and a good overall level of fitness are required. There are no water points or exit routes along the ascent. You can only retreat by going down. The via ferrata is completely secured with steel cables. There are no passages that have to be tackled by free climbing or on unsecured terrain.

Many steep and more difficult parts of the climb have been made easier by footholds. Nevertheless, the last part of the via ferrata, the so-called Engelskante, is a very impressive rock passage. The direction of the ascent to the southwest means the via ferrata can be ascended very early. The mountain season extends well into late autumn. The experienced mountaineer can also access the “Heini-Holzer” via ferrata during the long winter months.
